Tomato is the world’s largest vegetable crop and known as protective food both because of its special nutritive value and also because of its wide spread production. It is one of the most important vegetable crops cultivated for its fleshy fruits and it is considered as important commercial and dietary vegetable crop. The estimated area and production of tomato for India are about 3,50, 000 hectares and 53,00,000 tons respectively.
The plants typically grow to 1–3 meters (3–10 ft) in height and have a weak stem that often sprawls over the ground and vines over other plants. It is a perennial in its native habitat, although often grown outdoors in temperate climates as an annual. An average common tomato weighs approximately 100 grams (4 oz).
